Orinoquia
closeThe unexplored Orinoquia Region of Colombia is located between the high Andes and tropical rainforest in the most eastern point in the country. There are several contrasting ecosystems that make up this region such as lowland forests, mountains, and river plains of the Orinoco River. These different habitats are home to over 800 bird species. These ecosystems and animals must adapt to the changing wet and dry seasons in the region.
Pacific
closeThis region is not only one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, but is also one of the wettest. You will find several ecosystems including mangroves, beaches, rainforests, and cloud forests on the Andean slopes. Besides some 650 species of birds which may be found here, there are also several poison arrow frogs, and mammals such as the jaguar or tapir. The Baudo and Darien mountains are located here and are home to a rich flora and fauna. Conservation action in the Pacific includes National Natural Parks, private reserves and several IBAs.
Andes
closeThe most important environment is called The Andes of Colombia. Unfortunately, it is also almost one of the most degraded areas too. There are some wildlife areas with a possible option for recuperation, like the Bird areas, established as protective areas by the government. The andes are divided into: · Eastern, where the Colombian Capital (BTA) is located; with paramos, mountains and forest ecosystems. It is one of the longest montainous areas. · Central, is the ancient site between the three mountains. The difference is the high and wet ecosystem, so most of the different kinds of birds are located there. · Western, where the forest, mountains and paramos are very dry. However, it is still one of the richest and most biodiverse places in the world.
Caribbean
closeWhite sandy beaches, a deep-blue sea, mangroves, dry forest, the unique Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, mountains with permanent glaciers, and the biggest wetland system in Colombia (Ciénaga Grande)… are just some of the characteristics of the Colombian northernmost region. Flora and fauna are very popular here. Birdwatching is incredible, since nearly 700 bird species can be found. You'll discover several specialties of dry and montane forests, some birds of the paramo and many species in the Sierra Nevada, which is a very important endemic bird area.
